Washington DC / Value Village – Exploring the Thrift Store

Biryani!

That’s how the day begins.

How could anything go wrong on a day that starts like that??
Anita’s friend Sumit is an amazing freelance caterer and has called Anita telling her he has made us some.

I love Indian food!
And I am yet to meet him but I love Sumit too!!

We are thankful for good friends always, especially those that can cook and have a sweet heart to go with their sweet gestures – blessings to you Sumit. The food was really delicious by the way, let me know if you need a caterer for Indian food in the DC area.

Value Village

Why the fascination with the old? Flea markets and thrift stores… Just love ’em and I think it is because I grew up in a place like Dubai where absolutely *nothing* was more than a few years old. My UAE is a brand new, sparkling country. There are no attics where you can rummage through your grandmother’s old chest, no vintage clothes you can dust off the moths and try on, no old diaries you can snoop through to uncover secrets, no books that have been gifted to a precious loved one with romantic little inscriptions inside written decades ago, yet the loving energy still lingering on the now brown paper that make you pause, sigh and put a tear in your eye…

Anyhow, here we are, two Dubai kids, and we are going rummaging – YAY!

Remember these? Oh how devastating it would be when the tape player decided to chew up your absolute favorite rock compilation that you recorded from the radio (by pressing play, record and pause – no less).

Funny seeing these as I had the exact same thing at home growing up in Dubai, millions of miles away.

I actually considered buying these… then considered all of my ‘things’ which I never really valued much anyway somewhere in storage in the UAE… the end.

I *always* live by #7 and I wonder how people who have to lie to anyone (especially themselves) can ever sleep at night…

Be true and sleep well peeps, it’s really simple and it’s really worth it.

Hmmm… not sure about this one as the heart, in my experience, takes wicked pleasure in first making you blind then leading you into the sweetest of trouble… But then again, life ain’t so nice without a little bit of spice 😉

See the beauty of this place? There is something for everyone: for the religious, the spiritual, the satanists (the ones with bad taste anyway).

So thrift store is for used items. Anita and I had a giggle about the contents of that tampax box. Eurggghhhh barf!

That’s what I always say!
But my version is ‘What would Lisbeth Salander do?’.

Bet some of these are precious. I once dragged a dear friend and his dad to a flea market in Denmark. We came across a painting of the little town he lives in and my friend bought it. We researched it later and realized that it was actually the work of an acclaimed painter.

So keep your eyes open because these things do happen and they only happen to people who believe that they will happen 😉

Don’t u reckon dolls are a little creepy at times? Like clowns. No? See the blondie there? Any second now she can slowly turn her head, look you straight in the eye, squint… and tears of blood start streaming down her face!!! (Yaah horror is my favorite genre.)

Kramer ma’ man!

I must say I really, really, really enjoyed that!

Imagine – a whole big establishment, one of the many of many chains of this kind, and all able to survive through the kindness of strangers who come here to donate their things for those who need it.

Think about it – a big machine that works purely on kindness…

Beautiful…

I am now on countdown mode.
Two more sleeps will take me to Vegas for the first time.
Good night!
Or as my friend would say: sweet flights 🙂
Here’s to a world full of kindness.
